Keeping flu vaccinations on track

Kon Yiacoumi explains why a reliable supply matters to independents and patients…

For many people, getting a flu vaccination is a simple appointment at their local pharmacy. They book a time, turn up and expect the vaccine to be ready.

What they may not see is the work that happens behind the scenes to make sure pharmacies have the right vaccines, in the right place and at the right time.

Flu season is one of the busiest times of the year for community pharmacies. Demand rises quickly, patients often need appointments within a short time frame, and any delay in supply can make it harder for pharmacies to plan clinics and protect vulnerable patients before winter.

This year showed how quickly the supply chain can shift. Following changes in the UK flu vaccine market, some pharmacies found they no longer had access to the vaccines they had planned for through their usual ordering routes.

For a pharmacy, this is not just a stock issue. It can mean adjusting patient plans, rearranging appointments or worrying that patients may have to wait longer than expected.

In response, Alliance Healthcare reopened its flu vaccine pre-order service, giving affected pharmacies another opportunity to secure the vaccines they needed.

More than 13,000 extra doses were ordered in just over a week, on top of 144,000 doses already pre-ordered. For customers, that kind of flexibility matters. It helps pharmacies stay ready and reduces the risk of patients being turned away when they come in for protection.

As the season progressed, a separate supply timing change affected 250 pharmacies. Instead of leaving pharmacies to discover the problem when deliveries did not arrive, Alliance Healthcare contacted them directly. Pharmacies were able to decide whether to wait for their original order or switch to another available vaccine product. That clear communication is important.

Pharmacies need to know what is happening so they can make practical decisions, speak honestly with patients and keep vaccination clinics running as smoothly as possible. Even when the supply picture changes, being kept informed helps pharmacies stay in control.

As a result of this proactive approach, 101 pharmacies were able to secure the flu vaccine stock they needed at a critical point in the season. For patients, especially those most at risk from flu, this means a better chance of getting vaccinated locally and on time.

Behind the scenes, wholesalers play an important role in supporting pharmacies throughout flu season, helping them prepare for demand and respond when circumstances change.

That support helps pharmacies make sure patients can access their vaccinations when they need them. Reopening order windows, finding alternative supply, contacting affected pharmacies and giving clear updates all help keep the season running smoothly.

For customers and patients, the outcome is simple: fewer delays, fewer cancelled appointments and more confidence that vaccines will be there when they are needed.
