Back pain can be mechanical or inflammatory. Mechanical causes include injuries such as strains and sprains, osteoarthritis (spondylosis when in the spine), the cartilage of a prolapsed disc in the spine pressing on nerves, bone growth causing narrowing of the spinal canal pressing on nerves (spinal stenosis), or problems arising due to osteoporosis. Inflammatory types of back pain include ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.7,10,11
