Acamprosate
Acamprosate is indicated for maintaining alcohol abstinence therapy in alcohol-dependent patients, when combined with counselling. It is recommended that treatment should continue for a year. It is structurally similar to amino-acid neuromediators such as GABA and is able to cross the blood-brain barrier.13
It is thought to work by promoting GABA-type inhibitory neurotransmission, antagonising the effects of excitatory amino-acids, including glutamate.
