Nalmefene can be used to reduce alcohol consumption in people with alcohol dependence who have a high drinking risk level, without physical withdrawal symptoms, and who do not require immediate detoxification.19,20
It is an opioid system modulator with antagonist activity at mu and delta receptors, and partial agonist activity at kappa receptors. It may reduce alcohol consumption by affecting cortico-mesolimbic function.13
