To address vaccine uptake and adherence, the US study authors suggested travel health advice could have destination-specific information about disease risk, and also go into more detail about the health consequences of catching a disease that could be vaccinated against.15
Before doing so, though, consider the February 2018 update of the suite of NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries relating to travel immunisations (see panel). Its first recommendation is: €Reassure the person that the overall risk of contracting infectious diseases from abroad is very low if precautions are taken.€17
Travellers should also be advised: €The most common infectious diseases contracted abroad cannot effectively be prevented by vaccination.€
