Physical changes that can occur post-menopause include:2
- a decrease in vaginal secretion acidity, from around pH 4.5 towards neutral;
- thinning and increasing ‘fragility’ of the vaginal epithelium layer,
- a loss of the vagina’s structural ridges (rugae);
- microbleeds under the mucosa (petechiae).
Vaginal dryness is the most common reported vaginal symptom (70%) in post-menopausal women, followed by vaginal irritation (33%), dyspareunia (29%) and vaginal tenderness (14%)11
