Women experiencing troublesome symptoms or those under the age of 45 with symptoms should discuss the matter with their GP.3
There is normally no need for laboratory tests in otherwise healthy women over the age of 45 who have menopausal symptoms. However, a FSH-level test may be warranted for women:1
· over 45 years with atypical symptoms;
· aged 40-45 with menopausal symptoms including menstrual cycle changes;
· under the age of 40 for whom POI is suspected (monitor cycle patterns and FSH levels with blood samples taken at 4-6 weeks apart).
As part of the conversation around menopause, aspects to consider include:1
· the nature and severity of symptoms to help determine treatment approaches (drug and non-drug);
· cardiovascular disease risk;
· osteoporosis risk;
· the woman’s expectations.
