CPD module: Psychoactives and psychedelics

This module will review developments in the potential uses of psychoactive and psychedelic drugs as medicines.

After completing this module, you should be more aware of:

• uses of MDMA, psilocybin, LSD, ketamine and mescaline;
• how psychoactive drugs and psychedelics are being studied for medicinal purposes;
• legal changes taking place in other jurisdictions readmitting psychedelics into medical usage;
• the role of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) and other neurotransmitters;
• the focus of activity on 5-HT_2A receptors in the brain;
• the potential duration of therapeutic effect from a limited number of doses;
• how the addition of a psychedelic may enhance the effectiveness of psychotherapy;
• the nature of the psychoactive or psychedelic effects in general terms;
• adverse effects of psychoactive and psychedelic drugs;
• areas of therapeutic application of psychoactive and psychedelic drugs and medicines;
• potential modes of action in treating depression, anxiety, stress and pain.
