The JCVI has prioritised the following groups for vaccination:13
residents in care homes for older adults and their carers
everyone ≥80 years of age; frontline health and social care workers
everyone ≥75 years
everyone ≥70 years; clinically extremely vulnerable (shielding) individuals
everyone ≥65 years
anyone aged 16-64 years with underlying health conditions (including carers or those dependent on the individual for their care)
everyone ≥60 years
everyone ≥55 years
everyone ≥50 years.
People with an increased likelihood of immunosuppression, or who are immunocompromised through age or disease, may not respond as well to the vaccine. “Therefore, those who are clinically extremely vulnerable should continue to follow government advice on reducing their risk of infection,” says JVCI.
Covid-19 vaccination for anyone “suffering from acute severe febrile illness” should be postponed, although this does not necessarily exclude people with a minor cold or low-level fever. As intramuscular injections increase the potential for bruising or bleeding, the vaccines should be avoided by people on anticoagulants or with a bleeding disorder/thrombocytopenia.8,10
