Non-live vaccines are usually considered safe in pregnancy as they cannot replicate and so should not cause infection in the woman or unborn child. Due to insufficient data, though, JVCI cautions against the routine use of Covid-19 vaccines in pregnancy.13
Instead, the vaccine should only be considered for use in pregnancy when the potential benefits outweigh any potential risks for mother and baby. The mother should be advised about the absence of vaccine safety data in pregnancy.
That said, “JCVI does not advise routine pregnancy testing before receipt of a Covid-19 vaccine. Those who are trying to become pregnant do not need to avoid pregnancy after vaccination”.
There is similar advice for women who are breastfeeding, with the absence of safety data in such circumstances.
