There is some evidence to suggest that a quarter to more than a half of antibiotic prescriptions in primary healthcare could be inappropriate.14

As most antibiotic prescribing is done in the community setting, community pharmacies have the opportunity to play a central role in mitigating antimicrobial resistance through activities such as advising and informing prescribers, counselling patients, safely dispensing antibiotics and taking part in antimicrobial stewardship programs.15
