Australian discount pharmacy chain Chemist Warehouse opened its first UK store in Harrow earlier this week.

The UK market entry follows the announcement in May that Chemist Warehouse’s parent company, Sigma Healthcare, had entered into a joint venture with employee-owned London chain Green Light Pharmacy that will see the Australian chain acquire a 75 per cent stake in some pharmacies.

The venture will see a number of Green Light’s 22 pharmacies rebranded as Chemist Warehouse, the companies said in May.

The Australian chain will provide retail support in areas like store layout and marketing, while Green Light will provide dispensary, professional services and back office support.

Chemist Warehouse, which operates a number of stores in Ireland, said the opening in Harrow was a “significant milestone” in its international expansion, adding that it seeks to reach price-conscious consumers “at a time when British households continue to navigate cost of living pressures”.

James Kocharunchitt, head of the retailer’s UK division, commented: “We are incredibly excited to officially bring Chemist Warehouse to England for the first time and introduce British consumers to the exceptional value, extensive product range and pharmacy experience Australians have come to know and love.

“Through our partnership with Green Light Pharmacy, we’re combining the best of both businesses to create a new pharmacy experience that puts customers, affordability, and accessible healthcare at its heart.”

Mr Kocharunchitt said over 700 customers had visited on its first day, adding:

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the warm welcome and enthusiasm for Chemist Warehouse, and it’s been a fantastic start to our UK adventure.

“We look forward to building on this momentum as we continue to bring the Chemist Warehouse experience to more communities across the UK.”
