Pre-regs critical of training experience

A GPhC survey has highlighted major differences between how pre-registration students and their tutors view the training experience.

Tutors rate their training higher than their students in all areas. For example, 93 per cent of tutors thought their student would rate the experience as good or very good, while only 78 per cent of students rated it at this level. And only 1 per cent of tutors said their trainee would rate the experience as poor or very poor, but 11 per cent of students put their training in this category.

Trainees in the hospital sector, in large organisations, or in Scotland or Wales, were more likely to rate the overall quality of their training experience as good or very good. The survey is part of a three-year project that will inform how the GPhC develops its approach to the future education and training of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

Duncan Rudkin, GPhC chief executive, said: €Undertaking these surveys is part of our commitment to gather and analyse evidence and share it with others to inform debates, promote standards and identify areas for improvement within pharmacy. We hope that these results will inform ongoing discussions about pre-registration training and ensure that options for reforming training are based on the best available evidence."

The GPhC plans to investigate specific issues raised by the surveys, including the experiences of the small but significant number of trainees who were unhappy with their training.
