Minister praises selfcare pharmacy

Earl Howe praises NE London's LPC's self-care pharmacy concept

Speaking at the NE London LPC's self-care conference on November 12, the parliamentary under secretary of state for quality said that the LPC's work exemplified the collaboration necessary to deliver services via a diverse range of providers because it involved working with organisations that included six CCGs, six local councils and local directors of public health. €It's really good that GPs and CCGs are realising that collaboration with community pharmacy could help reduce the burden on their own practices,€ said Earl Howe. €This is not a competition. Growing numbers are now working collaboratively with community pharmacy.€

Pharmacists had a key role to play in medicines optimisation, which involved shifting the focus from merely the spend on medicines. And Earl Howe praised local pharmacists' work in early detection of heart problems. €It's obvious that this offers the potential to improve the lives of a great many people.€

Earl Howe also praised London pharmacies' flu vaccination service. €Many at-risk patients go to their community pharmacy every month to collect their repeat prescriptions and this presents an ideal opportunity for the pharmacy team to remind them that they're eligible for a flu vaccination.€
