Hemant Patel has written to all six CCGs in North-East London encouraging them to include pharmacy in their co-commissioning plans.
This would drive the development of new models of care, such as multispecialty community providers and primary and acute care systems, said the NE London LPC secretary. The SelfCare Pharmacy practice model, which it has already been agreed will be commissioned in this financial year, could help in a number of areas, said Mr Patel.
SelfCare Pharmacy repositioned pharmacy from a supplier of medicines to a new position where it supported the public and carers to use health and social services more effectively and efficiently, making it a critical hub for accessing these services.
€Inclusion of community pharmacy would ensure a more engaged relationship with local patients, carers and citizens so that we can promote wellbeing and prevent ill-health,€ said Mr Patel. €We hope that the CCGs will see sense in including community pharmacy in discussions.€
