Managing infective and allergic conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is a common problem, and can be as a result of seasonal high pollen counts or rubbing itchy eyes caused by hayfever.
Infective conjunctivitis presents slightly differently to allergic conjunctivitis, and each requires a different treatment approach.
Allergic conjunctivitis presents as red eyes, usually in both eyes, with an intense itching or burning sensation and clear watery discharge with some swelling.
Infective conjunctivitis presents as red eyes - it can be in one eye but usually affects both. There is general feeling of discomfort - a burning or gritty feeling - and a sticky discharge.
Treatments include better eye hygiene and anti-microbial drops.
