Between 0.5% and 1% of the UK population have pneumonia each year. Between 5% and 12% of adults with a lower respiratory tract infection will be diagnosed with CAP by GPs, and 22% to 42% of these will be admitted to hospital. Between 1% and 10% of these will require intensive care.3
The UK has the highest number of deaths due to pneumonia in Europe with more than 25,000 deaths a year, also making it the third highest death rate per capita. The mortality rate for CAP ranges from 5% to 14% in the hospital setting but can rise to 30% if requiring intensive care. More than half of deaths related to pneumonia are in the elderly over the age of 84.3,11
Around 1.5% of people in hospital develop HAP, with more than half not arising from ventilation or intubation. HAP can extend hospital stays on average by more than a week, but it also has a higher mortality rate of between 30% and 70%.3
Immunocompromised people are also at increased risk of lung infection and consequently pneumonia and have worse outcomes with a higher mortality risk.3
