A survey by Healthwatch Halton published in October 2024 found that 60% of the 166 respondents had heard of the scheme, although only 7% said they knew a lot about the service, while 39% said they had not heard of the scheme at all.6
Of the those who had heard of the scheme, the most common way was from the pharmacist (47%), followed by TV advertising (40%), the GP practice (27%), Healthwatch (19%), and word of mouth (15%).
The survey also listed how Pharmacy First was being promoted, noting that several pharmacies were displaying information within the pharmacy. Other methods of promotion included:
- · radio channel of information about the seven conditions being provided over a loudspeaker;
- · in-house leaflets created by pharmacies;
- · leaflets added to prescription items being collected;
- · pull-up banners listing the seven symptoms for all customers to see;
- · word of mouth, with pharmacy staff telling customers about the service when they came in.
Among the report’s recommendations were to raise awareness in general of Pharmacy First and to ensure that GP practices signpost their patients appropriately.
