Besides gout, elevated serum uric acid levels may promote hypertension and cardiovascular diseases and can be a significant indicator for the potential development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.[12]
Low uric acid levels have been detected in people with multiple sclerosis. It has been noted that very few people with gout present with MS, and it has been proposed that low uric acid levels may have a potential role as a biomarker for MS.
Other diseases associated with low plasma uric acid levels include Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, as well as skin or mucous membrane disorders such as pemphigus vulgaris and lichen planus.
