Analysis of FRIDs use in older people suggests that being prescribed two or more STOPPFall-listed medications could increase the odds of a fall by 86%. Falls which cause injuries such as hip fractures are also more likely.17
Common mechanisms involved in medicines-related falls include:9,18,19
· sedation with slowed reaction times or impaired balance;
· reduced blood pressure including orthostatic hypotension when standing up
· common fainting (vasovagal syndrome)
· vasodepressor carotid sinus hypersensitivity resulting in an exaggerated response of hypersensitive pressure receptors (baroreceptors) causing fainting when the carotid sinus in the neck is stimulated by increased pressure or stretching;
· heart rhythm changes (bradycardia, tachycardia or asystole).
