Around 11,500 women and 85 men die of breast cancer each year. However, over 95 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer survive at least one year, with 85 per cent surviving beyond five years and over 75 per cent beyond a decade.
Breast cancer mortality rates have been declining but it remains the UK’s fourth most common cause of death from cancer, and the second most common cause of cancer death in women.3
Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted diagnosis and treatment; Breast Cancer UK reported in July 2022 that around 10,600 fewer breast cancer patients had started treatment in England over the past year. It is possible to reduce the risk for some people: dietary and lifestyle changes, for example, could potentially prevent 30 per cent (17,000) of breast cancer cases.3
