Numark has urged pharmacists to support the new flu vaccination service regardless of concerns about the lack of a national IT support platform.
NHS England has encouraged pharmacists to find their own IT platforms, or use a paper-based system. Pharmacists will be expected to inform GPs which patients they have vaccinated and NHSE would prefer they do this electronically.
Laura Reed, Numark's service development manager, described the service as a real opportunity for pharmacy to demonstrate the valuable role it can play in supporting patients and delivering outcomes, and said paper forms should not be a barrier. "Let's face it, pharmacists are used to recording things on paper and, whilst not ideal, no one would want to see the service held up whilst we wait for the technology to be put in place. The new national service took us all a bit by surprise, and I suspect that PSNC didn't have time to negotiate a deal with national platform providers. Let's now get behind the service and deliver it."
