Remote supervision petition forces government reply

The government has been forced to respond to a petition aimed at stopping plans allowing pharmacies to operate in the absence of a qualified pharmacist.

The ‘Reject Remote Pharmacist Proposals. Keep Pharmacists Present for Patients’ online petition passed the 10,000 signatures needed to compel the government to reply.

Campaigners achieved the target more than 50 days before the April 18 deadline.

They have fiercely opposed government proposals that would enable a pharmacist to work as the responsible pharmacist for more than one pharmacy at a time, leaving other pharmacies under their control without a pharmacist physically present to supervise the supply of medicines.

GP pharmacist prescriber Siddiqur Rahman tweeted: “Well done all for signing this historic and important petition for #Pharmacists! Keep pharmacists PHYSICALLY present in #pharmacies for #patients & #patientsafety!”

The Pharmacists’ Defence Association tweeted: “We’ve supported this petition from its start, and opposed remote supervision for longer. Please keep sharing and signing.”
