Self care manifesto launched

The Self Care Forum has launched a manifesto that identifies practical steps towards achieving a €fully engaged self care model€.

While the NHS Five Year Forward View discusses patient empowerment and engagement, it contains little description of how this engagement might be achieved, according to 'My Health, My Life'. The manifesto describes four pillars of engagement that will help to put people in charge of their own lives, give them the information to make their own decisions and use health services as a support and resource when needed.

Speaking at the launch of the manifesto on November 10, the parliamentary under secretary of state for quality Earl Howe said: €Going further in self care is absolutely vital for the sustainability of the NHS and is also better for patients. To make this happen we need a systematic shift in the relationship between patients and clinicians so that patient are active participants in their own health.€

NHS England was exploring how to use a Patient Activation Measure (PAM) assessment tool to potentially save up to £4.65bn. Patients with higher PAM scores were more engaged in health promotion and preventative measures and used fewer health services. NHSE was running a PAM pilot covering 150,000 people in partnership with the Health Foundation, the King's Fund, five CCGs and the Renal Registry.
