NPA blood glucose equipment resource – available now
The NPA has released the resource as part of its ongoing promotion of patient safety and safer use of medicines. This resource helps pharmacy teams to ensure compatibility between the patient’s insulin devices/products and blood glucose monitoring equipment.
The new resource includes tables that cover compatibility information for the following:
- Universally compatible needles with the majority of insulin pens
- Reusable insulin pens and needles
- Pre-filled disposable insulin pens and needles
- Lancing devices and lancets
- Self-contained lancets
- Blood glucose testing meters and test strips.
Pharmacy teams can use also use the NPA “insulin identification checker†resource in conjunction with the “blood glucose monitoring and compatibility equipment checkerâ€. The insulin identification checker helps identify the correct insulin product to supply when presented with a generic prescription.
The NPA has developed these resources to help minimise the risk of common dispensing errors associated with these items, as identified through the NPA Patient Safety Incident reporting system. The NPA’s Chief Pharmacist Leyla Hannbeck is acting as the Medication Safety Officer (MSO) for all independent community pharmacies in England with fewer than 50 branches. The Medication Safety Service is currently being piloted for Scottish NPA members.
