Campaign update from Ian Strachan

Campaign to secure your future

Latest situation from NPA Chairman Ian Strachan

My thanks to all pharmacy teams for your efforts in 2016 on the campaign to secure the future of independent pharmacies. It is inspiring to see the sector pull together to make the case for investment for the good, ultimately, of the patients you serve.

The Department of Health cuts to pharmacy funding show a complete disregard for the community pharmacy sector and the wellbeing of patients.

There is still, however, a long way to go and a lot more to play for! This goes far beyond the funding position for 2016-18 and and is ultimately about keeping the ‘community’ in community pharmacy. What gives us grounds for hope is the unprecedented level of public awareness and active political support that has been generated over 2016.

So as we move towards 2017, this is what you can do now:

  • Ask 10 of your patients to make an appointment with your local MP. Download a briefing note for those patients from npa.co.uk/step-forward
  • Email your MP to demand that the government puts in place robust safeguards against the loss of access to pharmacy services, and engages with pharmacy leaders on a different, positive way forward for the development of community pharmacy in England. See lobby.supportyourlocalpharmacy.org
  • Prepare your business for challenging times ahead (see page 48). Talk to the NPA about the business services we offer – many of which are free of charge with membership.

I wish you Season’s Greetings, and I hope you can find some time away from the business for family and friends this holiday time.
