The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has said it has not contributed to proposals by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IATE) to roll out a pharmacist apprenticeship scheme but is keen to garner views from the profession on the issue.
IATE is consulting on the plans to introduce the five-year apprenticeship which it intends to approve by December 31 having held discussions with the RPS and General Pharmaceutical Council as well as numerous employers and higher education institutes.
The RPS, however, insisted it had not “contributed to the pharmacy degree apprenticeship trailblazer up to now” but would gauge whether the scheme is a suitable pathway to pharmacist registration after talking to its members.
“Government rules state that applications to develop degree apprenticeships must be employer led via their trailblazer groups,” the RPS said.
“We will work with our members on whether this form of entry is suitable as a route to registration as a pharmacist. At this point we want to take views from the profession.”
The RPS added: “Degree apprenticeships will need to meet the General Pharmaceutical Council's learning outcomes and standards in order to be fully accredited.”
