Health and safety

To help members deal with this ever increasing burden, the NPA and its business partner Ellis Whittam offer a Health and Safety Advisory Service, included free of charge within NPA membership

Effective management of health and safety of people, premises and pharmacy operations are priorities following recent GPhC inspections

Enshrined within all five of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) Principles contained within The Standards for Registered Pharmacies is the duty of the pharmacy manager to create and maintain an appropriate organisational and physical environment. The health and safety of people, premises and pharmacy operations is seen as critical.

As well as having to fulfil the obligations under the requirements of the GPhC principles, the pharmacy manager must also comply with the requirements of current legislation, notably the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

This legislation places an obligation on all employers to ‘ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety and welfare at work’ of all their employees,as well as anyone else affected by their activities, including patients, customers and contractors working with or visiting the pharmacy business.

To actively help members deal with this ever-increasing burden, the NPA and its business partner Ellis Whittam offer a Health and Safety Advisory Service, which is included free of charge within NPA membership, alongside an Employment Advisory Service.

The Health and Safety service provides pharmacy managers with some of the tools to address hazards, manage risk and their legal obligations and includes:

  • Advice by telephone and email on all pharmacy business health and safety matters
  • Online library of pharmacy-specific templates and guidance
  • Template Health and Safety Policy and Health and Safety Handbook for Employees.

Additional hands-on support

In addition, an enhanced one2one health and safety service provided by Ellis Whittam has been developed in close consultation with the NPA and from member feedback. NPA members enjoy special rates.

The one2one service is specifically for pharmacy employers. It can help reduce risks and improve the wellbeing of their employees, ensuring that the pharmacy business is legally – and GPhC – compliant. It takes a pragmatic approach and adds value by helping to reduce costs.

All too often, health and safety consultants are happy to merely inspect and report. With Ellis Whittam’s one2one pharmacy service, NPA members get hands-on, proactive support from their local Ellis Whittam Health and Safety consultant who will:

  • Perform a General Risk Assessment
  • Conduct a Fire Risk Assessment
  • Act as your legally required Competent Person
  • Provide a Health and Safety Policy and Employee Handbook
  • Create a prioritised Action Plan to improve health and safety and comply with GPhC standards
  • Bespoke your Health and Safety Management System.

With one2one, NPA members will receive regular bulletins and updates on legislative changes and best practice and a suite of important health and safety e-learning courses that will allow you to train
your staff.
