Medications associated with heart damage include:23,24,25,26,27

  • cytotoxic cancer treatments, especially anthracyclines such as doxorubicin, which can cause cardiomyopathy where the walls of the heart chambers thicken, stretch or stiffen, reducing pumping efficiency and potentially leading to heart failure
  • antipsychotics such as chlorpromazine, clozapine, fluphenazine, haloperidol and risperidone are associated with increased risk of arrhythmia, heart attack and stroke
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including COX-2 inhibitors exert cardiovascular effects including increasing heart attack risk
  • thiazolidinediones in diabetes are associated with an increased risk of heart attack and heart failure – the MHRA advised of pioglitazone and heart failure risk in 2011, and rosiglitazone was withdrawn in 2014
  • anabolic steroid abuse can enlarge the heart (cardiomegaly) which may lead to heart failure, as well as increasing atherosclerosis levels, with increased concomitant heart health risks.

Covid-19 vaccines are associated with heart damage, with the MHRA Yellow Card reporting scheme having received 1,343 reports of myocarditis, 954 reports of pericarditis, 22 reports of carditis plus other reports of endocarditis, as of November 2022. There have also been 15 suspected myocarditis or pericarditis reports with a fatal outcome.28
