The Welsh Government's Health Technologies Fund has allocated £500,000 of funding for medicines management technology in West Wales Care Homes.
The funding will go towards Beacon Digital's £1 million project to deliver a hand-held device for use on medication administration rounds in care homes. In the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) health board area, 70 per cent of care home residents may experience some form of medicine administration error.
Beacon Digital's executive chairman Professor Clive Bowman, said: €As a gerontologist, I have focused on how to improve the care of the frail elderly population, focusing on proactive support of wellbeing. We are delighted to have received support from the Welsh Government, and, in conjunction with our partners ABMU Health Board and Cardiff University, we will endeavour to realise the benefits of new technology to the care homes and their residents.€
Over the coming months Beacon Digital will be recruiting 50 care homes and their associated pharmacies in the ABMU area to take part in the project. Any care home or pharmacy in the area can be part of the three-year study.
