HCP first, business manager second, finds Bayer

Despite widespread recognition that business skills are an important part of running a successful community pharmacy, new research by Bayer Consumer Health has shown that more than a third (38%) of pharmacists are not comfortable with the selling side of their business and many feel they are not equipped with the commercial skills to lead and manage their pharmacy in a sustainable way.

Two in three pharmacists said that they lacked confidence to manage the business side when they first qualified and 1 in 10 said they felt pharmacy training doesn’t do enough to prepare people for this side of the job.

The research coincides with the launch of Bayer’s Business Fit for the Future programme which aims to build commercial confidence and business acumen, providing pharmacy teams with the practical skills to support their efforts to run a profitable business that is ready for the future.

The CPD accredited skills training will help pharmacy teams better understand today’s patient population and help them see how they can use this knowledge to unlock opportunities for business growth.

“Our research showed that pharmacists see themselves as healthcare professionals first, business managers second,” remarks Mark Ackland-Snow, Bayer Consumer Health’s head of pharmacy. “But with all the environmental challenges facing the profession, a mindset shift is needed if today’s community pharmacy professionals are to not just survive but thrive in the future.”

The first module focuses on customer conversations and we have a whole suite of topics planned for the future including motivating staff and mastering the art of selling.”
