Pharmacies urged to take part in repeat medication audit

Pharmacy Voice is encouraging all pharmacies to take part in a practice-based audit on repeat medication services and medicines waste that it launched last week.

The audit, which is available to all NPA, CCA and AiMP members, explores the different types of repeat medication services being used in community pharmacies in England and assess their contributions to ongoing patient care.

It is intended to determine whether current repeat medication systems prevent prescribed but unnecessary or inappropriate prescription items from reaching patients. It will also help pharmacy teams to review their current systems and consider their efficiency.

Director of policy at Pharmacy Voice Elizabeth Wade said: “This audit will provide vital insight into one the most important functions of community pharmacy – facilitating the provision of regular medication to patients.

"As the whole healthcare system strives to improve both efficiency and patient experience, it is vital that community pharmacy teams review opportunities to make processes for handling repeat medication supplies even more safe and lean. This audit will provide data that teams can use to inform their own procedures and support discussions with local primary care colleagues on how to optimise repeat medication systems.”

Pharmacy teams are encouraged to take part in the audit over any one-week period between August 1 and November 30.

Resources include a brief guidance document, which includes instructions for pharmacy teams, and a data collection sheet. Data should be collected for 50 different patients with repeat items (or all patients with repeat items over the week if there are less than 50).
