Patients need more education on headache management

One in five headache and migraine sufferers believe their treatment will work better if they wait until their symptoms are unbearable before seeking pain relief, according to research by Nurofen Express and Migraine Action.

More than a third of sufferers wait more than 30 minutes after the onset of pain before taking painkillers and one in three admit they do not follow dosage advice. Almost two thirds of sufferers say they would treat their headache earlier if they were recommended to do so by a healthcare professional.

Nurofen Express has partnered with Migraine Action to launch a campaign coinciding with Migraine and Headache Awareness Week (September 6-12) highlighting the need for better management of headache and migraine and the role of pharmacy in facilitating change. The initiative will deliver activation packs to pharmacies to help engage the local community and drive footfall in-store for patient consultations.

Simon Evans, chief executive of patient support charity Migraine Action, says: “The partnership between Migraine Action and Nurofen Express allows us to raise awareness of the headache and migraine treatment advice and support available. With the help of pharmacy staff we can improve the patient experience of these prevalent conditions which can severely impact sufferers’ quality of life.”

Dr Samantha Bradley, head of professional relations and medical marketing for Nurofen Express, comments: “The partnership with Migraine Action ahead of Migraine and Headache Awareness Week celebrates the role of pharmacy as the first choice channel for patients seeking treatment advice on headache and migraine. In addition to above and below the line marketing support celebrating pharmacy as the go to channel for headache and migraine advice, bespoke pharmacy activation packs will be sent to stores, which include training materials, patient pathway scratch cards and tools to publicise your expertise as a headache and migraine specialist locally.”
