MPs get taste of innovation at new Rowlands branch
Two MPs visited a newly opened Rowlands pharmacy in Scotland to see for themselves the innovative services it offers its local community.
Richard Thomson, the MP for Gordon, and Gillian Martin, who is the member of the Scottish parliament for Aberdeenshire East, went to the branch on Market Street in Ellon which is open six days a week.
The branch has an automated 24-hour prescription collection point and a self-service SiSU health station that provides patients with a free health check including BMI, blood pressure and body fat measurements in less than five minutes. Patients can access free online health improvement plans.
The branch also offers flu and pneumococcal vaccinations as well as advice for minor ailments as part of the Pharmacy First scheme.
“It’s great to see Richard and Gillian take time out of their busy diaries to see how we are investing in improving healthcare in Ellon,” said Diane Bates, Rowlands' local team leader.
“Alongside GPs, community pharmacy is a critical part of ensuring people can easily access the healthcare advice and support they need. The team at Ellon are very proud to be leading the way in patient service innovation.”
Ms Martin said the Scottish Government “recognises the critical role of community pharmacy in improving the health of our nation” and insisted the country’s Pharmacy First programme “is the envy of other parts of the UK.”
“The Ellon pharmacy takes this one step further. We need to ensure people can easily access professional healthcare advice and support at the right time which suits them and lead healthier lives,” she said.
“Ellon is showcasing what community pharmacy can deliver and I thank the staff for their commitment to our community.”
